Happy Pride!!
Very few topics arouse more attention of people than sex. It is generally seen that societies that hold conservative attitude towards sexuality also tend to suffer from a lack of general freedom of expression, which in turn is often associated with lack of economic, democratic and religious freedom.
In 2018, the Supreme Court of India decriminalized homosexuality by declaring section 377 of the Indian Penal Code unconstitutional in respect to consensual sex between adults. LGBT+ groups in the cities across the country celebrated the ruling as the beginning of a new era but unfortunately that has not been enough. Our society still does not accept people that belong to the LGBT community. Myth
busting: coming out to the world about homosexuality is not a one time thing, you come out once you must have the courage to do it again and again. Our society is very contradictory, they frown upon the relationship between boys and girls but cannot accept people as a part of the LGBT community, funny,
is’nt it?
Accepting people for who they are is a sure sign of growth but respecting people no matter what they are or who they are is a sign of human behavior. We tend to classify the gender of people of people based on how they look/ behave which is unacceptable. Do not judge a book by its cover! People think homosexuality is offensive but ITS NOT! It is as normal a gender like yours and mine.
Let’s look at some statistics. A study of responses of 7441 conducted by the ESRI found that 2.7% men and 1.2% of women self- identified as homosexual or bisexual. A question based on a variant of the Kinsey scale found that 5.3% of men and 5.8% of women reported same sex attraction .
Now, what are drawbacks of not accepting homosexuality? As a person living in the Indian society, I am well aware about how much these orthodox people despise divorce, not accepting homosexuality increases the divorce rate by 5%.
In conclusion, decriminalization of homosexuality by the government is not enough, it is a step towards development but unfortunately not enough. Unless the society does not decriminalize it, people from the LGBTQ+ community will always be oppressed.
