Nature’s Crown of Thorns

For lack of something better to do,

I engage in thought, a source of constant merriment.

But I find the mind to inevitably spotlight,

The ditch we now find ourselves in.

The ‘rattrap’ we’ve been baited into.

Pray, why, do we refer to rats to be an insult?

When we’ve proved beyond doubt,

That it is us, who are the pests.

The humans, the ‘apex species’;

Scurrying around like the very nuisance that we despise;

In aimless search of a ‘better life’.

What have we done to ourselves?

I now ask you, O illustrious society, a few questions

For we are in grave need of answers in these times.

How do you see, with your blind eyes?

How do you listen, when everything falls upon deaf ears?

How do you speak, with a voice that isn’t yours?

It is a wretched truth;

That in God we hold faith,

But in devils we trust.

Time and again those with the truth on their tongue have spoken,

Warning us of the dire trap we create for ourselves.

But we shan’t listen, for we are after all, humans.

And I am, one of them, one of you.

I wake, to hear birds warble their divine symphonies;

I wake, to see no cars scuttling away.

I wake, to smell nothing filthy in the air;

I wake, thinking to myself- “Just another bad day”.

We now live in a large-scale paradox;

Where cleanliness of environment seems nasty;

Where purity of air seems unwelcome;

Where pleasant sound is considered cacophony;

Us humans are indeed a comedic race.

Every day gets quieter, but it isn’t an upgrade.

Staying at home, keeping quiet,

All I can do is pray.

This isn’t the life I’m used to, but nature sure feels a different way.

I carry with me, sincere hope for repair,

To prevent further egregious acts, accordingly must we prepare.

More abuse, and the more the world will snap.

We must correct course, for now we run towards a trap.
