Intimacy is a topic which is not discussed openly in India which is pretty ironical given the fact that we have the 2nd largest population in the world and psychologists consider this silence as the main reason behind sexual crimes that take place in the country. India is among the 5 least safe countries for women in the world, yet all we do is complain about it rather than trying to find solutions to it without trying to understand the reason behind it. Let us try to analyze why this happens. There are two major types of psychological sexual disorders: Sexual Aversion Disorder (SAD) and Paraphilia.
SAD is a condition that makes you recalcitrant towards engaging in any kind of sexual activity. It can last for lifetime and can cause serious other disorders like anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, severe insomnia, etc. people with this condition prefer staying alone because they feel alienated from the society due to not being able to think or fantasize about sexual activities like a normal person. This condition is self-harming unlike paraphilia.
Paraphilia is a condition where excessive and uncontrollable thoughts of intimate activities takes place leading to a socially unacceptable or abnormal sexual behavior. Violent behavior during intercourse may seem pretty normal to them and they may end up harming the other person but it will be followed by guilt for doing so. Their thoughts include wanting to hurt the other person and engaging in non-consensual acts which include violence because they feel that it is the only way for arousal. This condition can be treated by counselling and drug therapy where antiandrogens will be injected to lower the amount of testosterone which will help in reducing the desire. This also proves that drug and counselling therapy together works more efficiently. But treatment can only be done if it is diagnosed and diagnosis can only take place if people ‘TALK’ about it. Talking about sex is considered a taboo in our country, adolescents are deprived of basic human touch which is necessary to avoid having a strong desire towards engaging in sexual activities and this is considered as the main reason behind violent rape cases that take place in our country. Not to forget that the very first person who was arrested in the Nirbhaya case of Delhi, did not find anything wrong with what he did. Stricter norms for the assaulter shouldn’t be the solution, preventing such a mindset from a young age should be, death sentences for rapists shouldn’t be the solution, inclusion of proper sex education in the curriculum of school students should be.
