We now are living in a world, that was unimaginable just a few months ago. Quarantine and social distancing have become another hurdle for us to overcome, with nations making continuous efforts to battle the coronavirus outbreak.
Although social media can mitigate the effects of quarantine for many people, it can’t replace human interaction in physical space. Compound that with being confined to a small area perhaps a room in an apartment when an infected person needs to isolate from family or being confined to your home and then consider the many worries about the possibility of getting infected or infecting other people, not to mention the financial consequences. You get a recipe for real psychological distress.
During these trying times, we must remember to take care of ourself and attempt to preserve our mental health and establish ways to do so.
1] Maybe start by making a routine for yourself.
Try to make yourself feel productive at home. Making a timetable or a to-do list of things that you need to achieve that day, even if your list comprises of getting out of bed and changing out of your pyjamas.
2] Find a calming activity; probably something that takes a good chunk of your time. Clean that dirty cupboard, do some art, organise your phone (delete those unnecessary pictures), meditate, do some yoga. There are so many things to do.
3] Get plenty of sleep; this provides our mind the time to reset and rest.
4] Make the most of technology and stay in touch with colleagues, friends and family via phone calls, texts, social media and video conferencing. This will make you feel connected and energised. If you're an introvert, then go ahead and ignore this entire point.
5]Make the most of catching up TV series, reading and exploring projects you have been putting off to beat boredom and stay mentally active.
6] Set time limits to avoid burnouts, try not to get overwhelmed with your work and take some time to relax.
It is also important to remember why we are doing this When you are feeling frustrated or cooped up, it can be helpful to think about the reasons why you are quarantining yourself. By doing your part, you are helping the world inch towards a better tomorrow.
