Speechless

Tia Gandhi

A dictionary that once blessed her with Xs and Qs has now faded away into nothingness. The pages already ash and smoke leaving no traces of its existence. For the first time in her life she is rendered speechless.

With her back against the wall, she stares up in awe.

A warm trail of tears trickled down her eyes but she doesn’t bother brushing them away for she is too busy staring at the masterpiece in front of her.

She had dreamt of this moment all her life but this, this sight truly exceeded all her expectations.

She had read poems on the sunset, she had heard people talking about its unfathomable beauty but she had never witnessed one. In fact, she had never witnessed anything.

She was born blind and just as she was about to give up hope on ever seeing, she had finally been blessed with the gift of the sight.

The first thing she wanted to see with her new eyes, rather the first thing she desired to see ever was the sunset, not her parents, not even herself. She insisted that when she opened her eyes for the first time, and saw, truly saw the world as others did, she wanted to gaze upon something beautiful, something mundane yet so breathtaking that she could truly appreciate and value her gift.

She kept staring at the evening sky much after the sun had set, just sitting and staring, eyes wide open. She had never felt so light, so free and just soo content, her life was finally complete.

She sat there up for hours just drinking in the beauty of the world and finally slumped up against the wall, she slowly fell asleep and dreamt of the sunset, reliving that moment again and again.

She spent her days waking up bright and early watching the sunrise and coming back up to her terrace again in the evening to experience the sun say goodbye. But if you ever asked her, what she preferred the sunrise or the sunset? She would answer, “The Sunset” for obvious reasons.
