India is home to the fifth of the world's youth and India's young population is its most valuable asset. Being a teenager comes with a lot of expectations, not only from your friends but from society as well.
The unnecessary pressure to be "cool and popular" is rather unsettling. Many of them look up to celebrities and so-called Instagram influencers and consider them as role models. There is so much influence on young minds through social media, television, magazines and this makes teenagers a great target for advertising agencies.
Teenagers are also considered to be a rather big spender compared to adults. The vulnerability of teenage minds allows them to be subject to the unnecessary hype created by advertising agencies. Their own spending power makes teenagers a lucrative market. Factor in the jeans, video games, laptops, etc. Teenagers' contributions to consumer spending multiply, unlike the typical spender who has been resilient in the face of a sluggish economy.
Consumerism which basically means spending money and consuming goods which are good for the economy is one way by which teenagers impact the economy for the better but there are several other ways by which they can improve the economy. Indian youth today is optimistic, independent, and opening to changing labor markets.
Moreover, a majority of Indian youth are liberals rather than conservatives which means that they are more open to try new careers, new things and immerse themselves to diverse perspectives as compared to the previous generations.
The amount our demographic spends on clothes, shoes, and entertainment each year is staggering. Our economy depends on teenagers earning and spending so we ourselves play a huge part in it and have the ability to change it.
