The first Monday of May this year, is not going to be the same as the previous years, just like any other day due to the outbreak of COVID-19, which has resulted in indefinite lockdown and restrictions across the globe.
To the dismay of fashion enthusiasts and hundreds of thousands of fans, the Coronavirus has claimed another victim, The Met Gala, 2020.
The most fashionable event for the past 72 years, The Met Gala has been cancelled. This year was extra special as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, would be celebrating it’s 150th anniversary. The Met Gala was established in 1948 as a way to raise money for the then newly-founded Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and mark the opening of it’s annual fashion exhibit.
The first ever Met Gala was a midnight dinner, and tickets were for $50 each. Now the cost for a single person to attend the grand event is a whooping $30,000 or $275,000 for a table, but that’s not it. Throw in a designer gown worth $35,000 and a ton of jewellery, and you’ll be all set.
Some may wonder what makes The Met Gala so different from all the other red carpet events. For starters, it has been hailed as “Fashion’s Super Bowl”, and with good reason. Every year, a unique theme is chosen, in accordance to which everyone on the guest list has to dress. These themes introduced the world to some iconic designs by The House of Versace, Thom Browne, John Galliano, Virgil Abloh, Marc Jacobs, Valentino and many more.
In May, 2018, Barbadian Singer, Songwriter, Actress and Businesswoman, Robyn Rihanna Fenty, more commonly known as “Rihanna”, was dubbed as the Queen of The Met Gala by Vogue Magazine. Her red carpet looks adhere to the theme, and she never fails to look flawless.
The Met Gala may have been scrapped this year, but that didn’t stop a group of savvy young creatives from assuming the mantle online. A virtual version of the extravagant gala took place on Twitter, with fans and fashion enthusiasts all over the world recreating their favourite looks, creating mood boards, putting together outfits for themselves based on this year’s theme, “About Time: Fashion and Duration”.
Despite being confined to the four walls of their homes, some working, some sitting idle, people from all four corners of the world came together to make up for the cancellation of their favourite event of the year, and truly mesmerised not only their followers, but the celebrities and designers too. It shows us that no matter where in the world we are, what situation we find ourselves in, we stand united, whether it’s fighting a global pandemic as one, or coming together to celebrate something we’re passionate about.
Fashion truly brings people together, even in hard times like the current.
