The Palace Of Illusions: Book Review

hitanshi lalan

This book is a mythological fiction.

It's a retelling of Mahabharat from Draupadi's perspective. But it's not confined to just retelling, it's more than that. It gives us an insight into the life of a woman with five husbands. It tells about her scuffles right from her unusual birth, out of fire to the various incidents which changed her life. The way she keeps her secret dalliance just to herself will make your jaw drop..!

Her perpetual friendship with Krishna is just wonderful. The dilemma that she faces throughout her journey makes this book unputdownable. Its writing style is appealing. The story starts right from her birth to the death of not only Draupadi but every major character in Mahabharat..!

Draupadi, also knows as Yagyaseni, is just a simple human, who has many desires and anticipations from life, like we all do, which makes this very relatable! It's very gripping and mind-blowing.

The only drawback I found with this book was that it doesn't have certain introductions required for the other vital characters of the epic. Nonetheless, even if you know this classic, it will take you to an entirely different realm which you haven't experienced before. By the end, you will find yourself wanting more of it...!

I rate this book a 4/5.

🌹My personal opinion 🌹~

The very idea that this book is written from Draupadi's perspective made me inquisitive and I couldn't help but read it. This was my first "mythological fiction" genre. I'm sure you will associate to Draupadi in a way that you will picture yourself instead of her. You will find yourself questioning her, hating her and also loving her by the end. This book is also one of my favorites and is very close to my heart. I started reading this book and found myself watching mahabharat on the loop on Hotstar and wanting to know more about each and every character of this great heroic which is larger than life! Due to this book, I gained so much interest in mythology. I recommend you to read this beautiful piece of art by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni 💚
